2021-02-23 Hip Snap I've played a double-player round with myself at Soehnstetten. The first player used Valk-Teebird-Zone-Comet-P3, the second player used MOLF-Banshee-Roc3-P3. The second player has a slight advantage as the first player always had the teebox, but the first player used my main discs, the second player only the second-rated discs. The weather was perfect: 10C, sunny, almost no wind, alone on the course ... so beautiful! Yet, I wasn't playing that well. Maybe the problem were playing that double-player round, or maybe it were my thoughts being on a different topic. Let's run through the holes: #1: Zone backhand, short left. Roc3 backhand right. Layups. -> 3, 3 #2: Zone forehand, a bit left and rolled. Zone thumber back up. I should have used the P3, as the Zone did not turn and landed left. Layup, Bogey. The Roc3 forehand was perfect! Parked. -> 4, 2 #3: Valkyrie backhand, early release and way left. If I only would be able to land right of the stairs ... just once! ;-) The high P3 thumber around the tree was bad. (The practice shot Zone forehand spike hyzer was good.) Another bogey. The MOLF backhand drive was left was well, but close to the tree trunks, from where I had an easy layup. -> 4, 3 #4: Valkyrie backhand, high and thus left. Zone backhand anny- flex. Drop-in. MOLF backhand, landed just at the edge of the plateau. Easy layup. -> 3, 3 #5: Valkyrie backhand, pretty good but faded a bit down at the end. Easy Zone backhand approach. Drop-in. MOLF forehand, on a great line, straight to the pin, as far as I can get my forehand. Then a bad P3 forehand. A missed 7m putt. From 4m, straight downhill, I did not hit chains but threw right into the cage ... and it jumped the same way back out! 8-O I've never seen that happen. It also rolled 6m. At least I made the putt from there. Double bogey from an almost perfect drive! (Maybe it's still better to fade down left than land straight to the tee, as the approach is so much easier and safer, even if it is twice as long.) -> 3, 5 #6: Zone forehand, short. Roc3 forehand, long. Two layups. -> 3, 3 #7: Zone backhand, short. Roc3 backhand, short. Bad upshot. -> 3, 4 #8: Valkyrie backhand, short. Bad upshot. 8m missputt. The MOLF drive was great. Made the 8m putt. -> 4, 2 #9: The usual problem of inability to land the Valkyrie backhand right of the scrubs. I landed left. P3 thumber over it. Missed the 5m putt. :-( MOLF backhand went too right. Easy layup. (The better miss clearly is right. Teebird and Roc3 both landed 8m to the pin.) -> 4, 3 #10: This time a good Valkyrie drive! Only 12m left to the pin. I missed that one ... and then I missed from 5m! :-( The MOLF drive was a bit low, thus short. The Zone forehand was bad. Then I also missed the 8m putt. -> 4, 4 #11: Zone forehand. Made the putt from 6m. Roc3 forehand, unfor- tunately landing behind a bush. Missed the 5m obstructed scoober putt. -> 2, 3 #12: Teebird hyzer. And made the 12m putt! :-D The Roc3 backhand -- flat and straight over the hedgerow, fading towards the pin -- and there it was: absolutely parked! :-) -> 2, 2 #13: The Valkyrie backhand finally went right. ;-) Only a bit too right, but nonetheless, that's a kind of overcorrection I am wil- ling to accept. The problem was that the Zone backhand approach from behind the tree failed misserably. Not because of the loca- tion but because of my throw: I yanked it and it also rolled back, even behind me! The next Zone backhand approach was good, but harm to the score was already done. The MOLF drive went a bit left. This time my sloping downhill approach was a scoober with the P3 that caught the last twigs of the bushes and settled there, giving me an easy 4m putt. (The practice drive with the Teebird landed in the big tree, about perfect. The putt was ob- structed, but the layup was easy.) -> 4, 3 #14: The Teebird and Banshee drives both went a bit long into the lift track. I half-ran on putt from 8m and fully ran the other from 7m and a better angle, missing both. -> 3, 3 #15: Teebird backhand. Made the 6m uphill putt. MOLF backhand, a bit longer than the Teebird. Made the 4m uphill putt. -> 2, 2 #16: Valkyrie, too much right. Bad Zone forehand approach. 7m missputt. MOLF drive also right but nearer. Layup. 4m putt. -> 4, 3 #17: Valkyrie backhand drive, with a bit too much anny, catching the twigs of the tree at the OB edge. Just barely in bounds, but in a good position. Another bad Zone approach. Missed the putt from 9m. The MOLF backhand drive was great! The best one yet I had on this hole. Still 20m to the pin (and there's few hope to get closer, as it is about 105m and uphill), still gave it a half-run. -> 4, 3 #18: Got out the Comet, but, for whatever reason, threw it with hyzer, which it held nicely. Luckily it came to rest at the edge of the flat area. Missed the putt from 15m, but made the come- backer from 6m. The Roc3 drive landed a bit right. Easy layup. Drop-in. (A practice drive with the Zone was 5m to the pin.) -> 3, 3 The scores add up to +5 (=59) for the first player and E (=54) for the second. Problem 1 were the bad Valkyrie drives in the beginning. The MOLF drives worked well all round, the Valkyrie drives did not really click (#10 was the only good Valkyrie drive). Problem 2 and the main problem: the upshots. 10 bad upshots in 36 holes. Substracting 9 birdies, leave 29 holes. Substracting the missed putts and layups, then we end up realizing that about every second upshot was bad, costing a stroke! Problem 3 were rather many putts missed in the 6-8m range. Highlight 1 were starframes on holes #12 and #15 (including the 11m putt). :-) Highlight 2 was parking -- absolutely parking -- holes #2 and #15 with the Roc3. Highlight 3 was the best so far drive on #17 with the MOLF. The MOLF might be the more useful drive on this course, compared to the Valkyrie. But the most important takeaway from today's round concerned my form. I realized and felt the importance of some kind of hip snap: a quick and powerful impulse of hip rotation, while keep- ing the spine upright and the body tight. The Valkyrie drive on #10 was the result of focussing on that aspect, and it payed out instantly. I need to practice more with focus on exactly that part. There's new distance potential waiting. ;-) http://marmaro.de/discgolf/ markus schnalke
