2020-10-11 Suedstaatenturnier Today I played the Suedstaatenturnier in Ehningen. [0] [1] I like this tournament format a lot: The first round normal singles play, the second round best shot doubles with teams joined by the scores of the first round, best with worst, second best with second worst, and so on. IMO that's the perfect format. In the morning I scored +5 with 1 birdie, 11 pars and 6 bogeys. It was a decent round, rather good. I had bad drives, bad upshots and bad putts but nothing horrible, especially no double bogeys. In the afternoon Felix (+10 in the morning) joined me. As an Ul- timate player, he knew how to throw discs, yet he was rather new to disc golf. Although he was not the great putter that I would have needed ;-) he was a very fine person to play with. His char- acter was a pleasure to play with. We scored -3 with 5 birdies, 11 pars and 2 bogeys. Overall it were +2 (110 with two rounds par 54). This placed my- self 13th of 30 players in Open. (Each stroke less would have gotten me one place better.) There was more potential, but I am very pleased with my performance: No severe mistakes and overall a solid game. The holes (regular holes): 1) I threw a Teebird forehand in both rounds. First round it was great. It was my first forehand on the day, but it came out so clean! I hit the last tree, just before the pin. Then had a straddle anny putt, that I left a bit short. -> 3. Second round my drive (which we used) was a bit shorter and obstructed. We had to lay up for an easy putt. -> 3. 2) First round I went with a Valkyrie backhand anny. In hindsight this was a bad disc choice -- too (over)stable. I have parked the hole in another tournament with my P3. The Valk simply was not the disc to go with. I overturned it, landing half way but still on the fairway. Rather easy up and down. -> 3. Second round I used a better disc, namely the Comet, on a nice turning line. This was the better drive. And I sank the 15m putt! :-) This was my best putt of the day. -> 2 3) Frist round a great Valkyrie anny flex shot, even better than those last week. 18m lay-up. 5m putt. -> 3. Second round I was a bit rushed by the group behind us. I should have taken more time. Had a high release, catching the twigs and dropping down, but open on the fairway. We used Felix' drive farther down the fair- way in the bushes right, but because of the bushes could not throw a close approach. -> 4. Maybe my open look would even have been the better option. At least, my bad drive had good chances for par. 3b) Both rounds about the same shot: A slight anhyzer Comet throw, landing center fairway. First round I missed the long putt. Made the 4m comebacker. -> 3. Second round Felix' drive (on a similar lines) was a bit better. (I should have thrown a driver with risk, as he already had a good lie.) Unfortunately we both missed the 10m putt. -> 3 4) Both rounds the same shot: Comet straight up the hill. Both round the same result: I landed right at the edge, with a long look to the pin. Both rounds it was a secure layup and an easy putt. -> 3. -> 3. Par on this hole is like a birdie. I am very happy not not have hit trees here. The Comet drive is so much better than forcing the Felon for a lucky shot! 5) Both rounds Teebird backhands. First round a bit overturned right, layup, putt. -> 3. Second round our drives were pretty much equally good at 7m. We used his, from which I made the bir- die putt! -> 2. 6) Both rounds I went with the Teebird on the hyzer route. First round I got lucky to get through between branches, landing 8m to the pin. I went for the putt, but airballed! The comebacker was equally long, and I missed it. This got be a bogey instead of birdie. This hurt. :-( A layup from 8m would have been too defen- sive, but my putt should have hit anything to have a short come- backer. -> 4. Second round the drive was a bit better, being parked. :-) -> 2. 7) The only hole I used the Felon. I threw a good forehand on the first round, catching the bushes long left of the pin (without much skip). From there I made the surprisingly hardly obstructed 6m putt for the only birdie of my singles round. -> 2 Second round I did not want to go this far. I don't know, there's a lot of stuff to stop the disc, maybe I should have done just the same as in round one. Somehow I thought that I had been lucky on round one to not going beyond it and that I cannot park it this way. Thus I tried to power-down the throw, which worked out badly. Not too worse, but a bit short and limited ceiling and 8m to the pin. Maybe I should have rather thrown the Zone full power on a hyzer line. Anyways, we both missed the putt (of our finishing hole). -> 3. 8) Both rounds the exact same drive: Teebird to 7-8m from the pin. Very good! :-) Both rounds I missed the slightly uphill putt, and Felix did so as well. -> 3. -> 3. 9) Here as well the exact same drive both rounds, but not working out as well: Valkyrie a little bit overturned, landing at the edge of the scrubs on the right. First round I made my only real mental mistake. I was unsure what line to throw, altering between a putter anny and a putter thumber of the bush. I chose the latter but should have thrown the former. The thumber did not work out at all, leaving be a 12m putt that I missed. -> 4. Second round we used Felix' drive, which was in the open. We both missed the 12m putt. -> 3. I think the Valkyrie backhand was the right disc choice, I just should have thrown with a bit more hyzer. 10) Overturned the Teebird in round one (to avoid the very thick scrubs on the left, that I landed in last year). I was pin-high but way right. From there I threw a perfect Teebird thumber over the trees to land it 5m from the pin! My best approach shot of the day. -> 3. Second round the Teebird shot was just as I want- ed, around the bend and half down to the pin. But then we both missed the 8m putt and furthermore both also missed the 8m come- backer. :-( -> 4. Another birdie turned into bogey. Four bad putts! 11) My Valkyrie backhand was too high in the first round, clip- ping some leaves, landing shot, but still in the fairway. My Zone backhand approach, unfortunately, was really bad: too low to tight, at least getting a favorable anti skip. From there I had to lay up. -> 4. Second round, however, I threw a wonderful Valkyrie drive, all through the tunnel, fading left to the pin! It was not as parked as other drives, but from my expectations and feelings, this was my best drive of the day. Then again we both missed the 7m putt. -> 3. (If we only made a third of the 7-8m putts ...!) 12) Teebird backhand. The downhill slope is rather difficult to hit. First round I went high, caught some twigs, faded left into the trees. With a low ceiling I tried a Felon backhand skip shot. It could have worked, but I hit the ground too early, skipping bad and landing short. (A forehand roller might have been another option, but I didn't even consider it.) Missed the long putt. -> 4. Second round my Teebird backhand parked the hole! :-) -> 2. 13) First round I went with a Teebird backhand, threw a bit high, caught some twigs, leaked left. Had to approach with the Zone then an easy putt. -> 3. Second round I threw the Comet on a nice line -- it's almost always a nice line when you throw a Comet! ;-) We had a 6m putt for another birdie. -> 2. 14) This hole I awaited the most. I was so keen on throwing my OLF here. I think that it shapes perfectly for that -1/3 flight path ... and so it did. I threw the same shot twice: Slightest anny release (I think) turning nicely and securely around the mando, tracking down the hill, just a bit too much anny/turn to not have come out more towards the pin. Both rounds I landed in the last tree behind pin 13, from which it were obstructed, but short layups to the basket. -> 3. -> 3. Easy pars on a 140m hole with a mando is not the worst thing. :-) 15) Valkyrie backhands. First round a great one, landing just be- fore the road. I had 14m putt (with a backstop) but missed it. -> 3. Second round my drive was a bit shorter. About 25m to the pin, again missed. -> 3. 16) This hole was the one I knew the least what disc and line to throw. I went with the Teebird forehand both times, but not hav- ing good throws, not having success. The problem is that I have to throw the Teebird pretty flat or at least not with hyzer, which is a bit difficult with my grip, thus it tends to have some OAT. Maybe I should have flicked the Valk on a hyzer-flip line. I did not do that because I hardly practice it. It felt to risky. I also thought about a Comet backhand. It surely would have gone out, but it might have faded left at the end, away from the pin. Thus the Teebird forehand still seemed to be the most safe throw. Frist round the disc hung high in a tree on the left. I had a forehand window out and made such a good TB flick that it flew way past the pin! Had to approach and putt. -> 4. (A Zone flick out would have been the better option.) Second round the drive was okay, but we missed the 15m putts. -> 3. In hindsight, a Valkyrie forehand would probably have been the best option. It would have allowed for the birdie, whereas the Comet backhand rather plays for par. (The Teebird forehand didn't get me no bir- dies neither.) 17) First round I threw the Valkyrie backhand into the bushes right. The Zone backhand hyzer didn't get out. But still had an only slightly obstructed 8m putt, which I missed. -> 4. Second round I decided that the hole actually shapes better for a fore- hand, thus flicked the Teebird. This was almost good, on line, just a bit short. We missed the 8m putt. -> 3. I was the better player in our doubles team. On 12 holes my drive was better. On 3 holes ours were equally good. On 3 holes his was better, but in all cases only slightly, meaning that mine would have allowed for the same score. My drives were really good in general today. Some drive statistics: - Teebird: 11 BH + 5 FH - Valkyrie: 10 BH - Comet: 6 BH - Felon: 2 FH - MOLF: 2 BH The Teebird clearly was my main driver today, with the Valkyrie as the second workhorse driver. Usually it's the same two, just with roles switched. This probably depends on the course. Felon and MOLF were used as intended: Only when they truly fit well for the shot. Using the Comet this much -- and always with success -- makes me happy. It used to not fit with the other discs, but today I managed to switch throwing styles accordingly. It did provide smooth, controlled shots to stay on the fairway, avoid mistakes. Seems it regained a slot in my bag. :-) Our biggest problem in the doubles round was the putting. Neither of us was a good putter from 7 or 8m. There we left many strokes. I'm not even sure if we made *any* putt from this distance, though we had two runs each time. In my own game, this is the weakest part. I should practice making these putts. From 5m and in, I'm pretty solid now, but 6-10m is a big problem. There I have no consisten- cy in my form. I've got three ways to putt or so, Better I pick one form and stick to it, repeat, repeat, repeat. Maybe repeti- tions would solve the problem automatically. Thus, get the prac- tice basket in the cellar and start doing some putts each day!
