2019-12-29 Hitting Metal A wonderful disc golfing day: 0 C, sunny, calm. These are the weather conditions I like to play disc golf the most. Well, it's not the nicest weather, because your off hand will get cold, but as disc golf is strongly connected to the winter for me, this is the best you can get in the cold half of the year. Besides, there are no people sitting in the fairways, blocking holes. Today, I played two rounds as two players each. I.e. I had four discs with me: S VL, DX EG, JB Zone and D P3. I threw two drives, then played from both of the lays. Although one player had the Valk and the other the Eagle, I used the other two discs as it fit. Especially I putted with the P3 usually for both players. The last time playing -- a month ago -- felt to be a long time ago. My playing wasn't as flowing as it used to be. I missed a lot of the big hyzer lines. I hit the band from 4m away. I played over par on average. But on the positive side, my forehand was pretty solid today: good drives, good approaches. I had long backhand drives on hole 1 and 9. And, most important, my long putts (around 15m) felt good. Although I didn't hit them (which I don't expect to do) they often came in close and had chances to hit, without flying far past. The comebackers usually were 3m putts. The difference is, that these 15m throws used to be ap- proaches and now they feel more like missed putts ... not nega- tive as the probability to score are low for me, but I give them a good run. I started out horribly with five bogeys on the first four holes (two players). But then I could score a birdie for both players on hole 6. Both with a long forehand hyzer and a long putt. And another birdie with a 3m putt from the Valk forehand. On the long last hole, I had two fine drives, which left me with only 15m putts. I didn't make them, but the birdie was within reach. ;-) This made it a 27 (E) for the Valk player and a 29 (+2) for the Eagle player. The second round had a better start. I still suffer with hole 2. It's actually the easiest hole, but I can't control it in my head. Rather out of frustration, I threw a P3 backhand ... and prepared the birdie with it. Disc golf is strange! ;-) A nice slight anny forehand with the Zone on hole 5 to park it. :-) This really seems to be the best shot on that hole. Hole 6, which produced two birdies last time, produced two bogeys this time! Double tree hit, each. *uff* Then on hole 7 the highlight of the day: Eagle forehand, flipped up pretty (i.e. too) quickly, then kept the turning tendency to ride straight and straight and straight ... and tickled the chains! Wow! Such a surprise! So close! Chains! Sure, it flew far past and I missed the long putt back, but ... Chains! :-D Eventually the Valk player came in with two bogeys and no birdies at 29 (+2). The Eagle player played the round of the day with two birdies -- one with the P3 and one with the Zone, none with the Eagle -- and one bogey at 26 (-1). It was nice being back on the course. The weather was great. Carrying the discs in the hand is what I like most on the Wiley course. D P3 and JB Zone are so nice discs. No wish to change anything about that part of my bag. I know the Star Valkyrie really well by now. It flies straight like a DX Teebird but gives in to both curves better than the fighting Teebird. There's no need for a premium plastic Teebird on this course for me currently. The DX Eagle I understand more and more. This initial turn is something none of my other discs has. Still it has a strong fade at the end. It really gives new lines to my bag. Up to now it only was an allround backup disc, but it might become a thrower for specific holes, I think. Tomorrow I'll be back on the course, with friends. We'll probably play single or two-disc rounds. I'm not sure what discs to play with then. I don't want to play with more discs than they have, but at the same time I want to putt with P3s. The C-Line P3 had been the best compromise in most cases, but it's not as HSS as it used to be and it's very slippy when wet (and the ground is fros- ty and wet in the sunshine). The JB Zone was the second best op- tion, but so different to putt with. Or I go P3 + Zone ... or P3 + VL/EG ... or maybe Comet only ... or P3 + some understable driver? http://marmaro.de/discgolf/ markus schnalke
